Good Morning All,
Hebrews 13:8; “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and
today and forever.”
Over the last few weeks, we have experienced or endured the election
cycle. I followed a discussion between
two different theologians about how a Christian should respond to the next
president. One was fairly liberal in his
positions and supported Clinton and the other was more conservative and
supported Trump. They debated what a
Christian’s response should be if one or the other won the election. It was interesting but at the same time
disappointing as well.
They started with the premise “As a Christian American I should …” This is a false premise; “Christian” should
never be an adjective. Christian is a
noun; Christian is what you are. I am a
Christian; you are a Christian. The word
Christian should not describe you it should define you. I am a Christian. I am this because Jesus died, rose, ascended
into heaven and is my Lord. You are the
same. Who is or who is not president
should not impact your faith. If you are
looking at this election and you are disillusioned and think everything is
falling apart or if you look at this election and think everything will be made
new and right; you have the wrong god.
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and tomorrow and forever.
Regardless of who is or is not president, you and I are called by God to
be faithful to His Word. We are called
to trust in His promise. We are called
to live our lives as those who are spreading the kingdom of heaven in this
world. You and I should love one
another, regardless of who is president.
You and I are our brother’s keeper, regardless of who is president. You and I are called to witness to God’s
truth, regardless of who is president.
Our faith, our hope, our salvation is built upon Jesus and his death and
resurrection. It is not built upon
anything else and nothing alters this truth.
As some lick their wounds over this election or seem to gloat and crow,
Christians continue to be a faithful force in this broken world. Christians continue to seek to comfort the
wounded, heal the broken, encourage the struggling and speak God’s truth of
hope and salvation to all whom we meet.
This is the calling of the Christian; this is the calling of the
Church. It does not change with a change
in an election.
Jesus tells us to render unto Caesar what is Caesar’s and unto God what
is God’s. What do we owe Caesar? We should be good citizens. We pay our taxes and obey the law. What do we owe God? We owe Him all we are and will be. He sent Jesus to die for us; we owe him our
life and our love. No matter how you
voted, or whether your candidate won or lost; you are still a redeemed child of
God and that does not change.
Father
of all healing, tempers flare and anger is expressed. Send your Spirit to heal, send your Spirit to
bring us to be your faithful children.
Calm the fears and lead us to see that we are always in your loving
hands. Guide us to be your loving and
faithful servants. In the precious name
of Jesus we pray, amen.
God’s Peace,
Pastor Bret
