Good Morning All,
Matthew
5:6; “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall
be satisfied.”
Do you have the hunger? That is a question that many people get asked
in life. Many young people get asked
this when they want play sports. For
some, their career choices ask this question; careers like doctors or
lawyers. Sometimes that’s the question
you have to answer if you are starting your own business from scratch. Do you have the hunger?
Do you have that deep seated craving to
accomplish your goal? Do you possess
that intense longing to achieve the end?
Most of us have something that we are passionate about; there is
something that we really strive to accomplish.
This is what Jesus tells his disciples that
they will have; a hunger and a thirst for righteousness. But how do we get this desire? How does this work? It’s part of the old you and new you
transfer.
The old you is the unconverted sinful
man. This is the you who was an enemy of
God but when you heard the Gospel preached to you; the Holy Spirit entered you
and you became a new creation. You were
justified by God and then entered your sanctified life, that time of life that
we live while God is molding us and shaping us to be the disciple that he wants
you to be. God gives you two things to
start with. First is his grace; the
undeserved love to forgive your sins.
The second is faith. Faith is the
desire or the hunger to trust in God’s promise of forgiveness. This faith makes us a new creation or a
different creature. This faith is the
desire or the hunger that the Holy Spirit causes in us. The new us desires to be closer to God; the
new us seeks after God; the new us focuses on Jesus.
The non-believer cannot do this because he
has no faith; he has rejected God and his mercy; he has turned a deaf ear to
the Sprit and turned his back on God.
But those who believe, those who have that desire to trust in God’s
promise are blessed by God. This
blessing is not because of what we do but because of who we are. We are God’s children, his redeemed, his
chosen. He gives us His Spirit to give
us faith. With this faith we hunger
after righteousness because of the deep-seated love that God has for us. We strive to be closer to God; we flee to him
when we are scared, we call to him with joyful glee when we celebrate his
gifts.
Because of the Spirit, we hunger for God;
we seek him out; we trust in his promise- we have faith. This is what we cling to; this is what we
hold onto when trials strike or pain occurs.
We cling to God’s promise and when we live our new life we hunger for
righteousness; we hunger for God and the blessings that he gives us. Trust in God’s promise hunger for his
righteousness.
Father
of all mercies, we give you thanks that you have called us to be your children
and that by baptism we are marked as yours.
Strengthen in us the hunger for righteousness that through us, your
visible hands, the world may see you as the one true God. In Jesus’ precious name we pray, amen.
God’s
Peace,
Pastor
Bret
